All of the criteria, with a description, used to compare the hosting companies can be found here. If anything is not clear, or you think we need to provide further details, send us a comment, by visiting the Support page.
| Storage | This is the amount of space you have to store all of your files. You will only need 100gb or more if you store a lot of high quality photos or videos. Today, this site only uses 1mb of storage which is 0.001gb. |
| Bandwidth | Every time someone visits your site, the information is transmitted from the hosting company to the internet. Transmitting the file uses bandwidth, which is t calculated but the size of the files sent. If you host videos, you can use up your bandwidth quickly, otherwise, you will need millions of visitors to impact your bandwidth allowance. |
| Windows | Windows is relatively new when it comes to hosting companies. And it typically costs more. One thing to note, even if you use Windows to create the files, your hosting company does not need Windows to run your site. For example everything on this site was built on a PC running Windows XP, but is hosted on a Linux server. We have the best of both worlds. |
| Linux/ Unix | Linux or Unix hosting accounts are usually less expensive and have a lot more features. |
| Up Time | Virtually every hosting company states on their home page that they offer 99.9% up time. If they don't move on - they are cutting corners which will impact your site. |
| Domains | Most hosting companies let you have more then a single domain per account. This is useful if you want to have several sites, but only pay the one fee. Look for unlimited domains. |
| Email Accounts | Email accounts, like domains, should be unlimited. This allows you to have email address for anyone and for any purpose. For example, use a different email address for different advertisements or promotions, to track which ad is more effective. |
| Fantastico Deluxe | This is one of the great tools that is available with a Linux host. It offers a huge number of services and installs everything for you. That means it installs the application and they data base. You really don't have to do anything. All of the features that follow in this section would be installed by Fantastico, so that you don't have to spend hours installing them yourself. Deluxe is key since it is the latest version. I have read that earlier versions had security holes that have since been fixed in Deluxe. |
| Portal/CMS | A portal or content management system is a software management system that allows you to have control of your web site, registered users, and provide 100% interactive web site using databases, without having to know HTML, databases or programing.
