Academic Software

Adobe DreamWeaver

This is really the industry standard. And it is easy to see why when you start to use it.

Simple to use, everyday web dev is a breeze. And things that were complex are now muc easier to do. Its a bit expensive, but its also the best. If you have been doing web sites for a while then this is the product for you.

If you are just starting out, it would be better to write HTML by hand first. That way you will really learn HTML (its not very hard to do) and will give you a better insight when you look at getting a full blown site builder like DreamWeaver.

This is the king of the hill - so this should be on your wish list if you don't have it already.

Microsoft FrontPage

This has been a standard for many web developers. As a former user, I found it worked well for basic web page building.

It has been replaced by Microsoft's Expression which is the next generation product.

Microsoft Expression

This is the replacement product for FrontPage. It and the surrounding family of products are targeted at Adobe.

A quick search of the internet showed that Expression is more then just a new version of FrontPage but still has a ways to go to compare to DreamWeaver.

One big gap is the lack of PHP and JSP support since both are in wide use.

Microsoft has a real challange on their hands for this product to be accepted by the developer community. They have to prove that it is a lot better then Dreamweaver. Today it is still not quiet as good. So they have some work to do.
